چکیده

[1] A high-frequency asymptotics approach within the Lagrangian framework shows that some exact equatorially trapped three-dimensional waves are linearly unstable when their steepness exceeds a specific threshold. A Toy Model of the Instability in the Equatorially Trapped Convectively Coupled Waves on the Equatorial Beta Plane

The equatorial atmospheric variability shows a spectrum of significant peaks in the wavenumber– frequency domain. These peaks have been identified with the equatorially trapped wave modes of rotating shallow water wave theory. This paper addresses the observation that the various wave types (e.g., Kelvin, Rossby, etc.) and wavenumbers show differing signal strength relative to a red background....

Control of the energetic proton flux in the inner radiation belt by artificial means

[1] Earth’s inner radiation belt located inside L= 2 is dominated by a relatively stable flux of trapped protons with energy from a few to over 100 MeV. Radiation effects in spacecraft electronics caused by the inner radiation belt protons are the major cause of performance anomalies and lifetime of Low Earth Orbit satellites. For electronic components with large feature size, of the order of a...

On the onset of low-Prandtl-number convection in rotating spherical shells: non-slip boundary conditions

Accurate numerical computations of the onset of thermal convection in wide rotating spherical shells are presented. Low-Prandtl-number (σ ) fluids, and non-slip boundary conditions are considered. It is shown that at small Ekman numbers (E), and very low σ values, the well-known equatorially trapped patterns of convection are superseded by multicellular outer-equatorially-attached modes. As a r...

Resonant triad interactions on an extended equatorial β-plane

Linear equatorial wave theory (Matsuno, 1966) has shown that equatorially trapped waves (particularly Rossby and Kelvin waves) are important waves in determining large scale climatic processes such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO; e.g. Philander, 1990; Clarke, 2008). Other factors that determine properties like ENSO periodicity and strength are stochastic processes (Kleeman, 2008). Th...

BEM-FDM modeling of water free surface interaction with trapped air in OWC chamber for calculating generated power

Free surface modeling plays an important role in some ocean structures design, especially in Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. Boundary element method (BEM) is a suitable method for free surface modeling due to its simplicity, quick solving, and low data storage requirement. In this paper, BEM was used for free surface modeling in OWC chamber and out of it. Linear kinematic and dynamic bo...
